What Hermes Agent Actually Is
You read the post about the big-lab agents you cannot own. Then you asked the right question: what is this open-source thing, and what do I do first. Here is the short answer. Hermes Agent is a real agent you install and run on hardware you already control. It is made by Nous Research, MIT licensed, and the repo is public at github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent. It is one of the fastest-growing open-source projects on GitHub. No waitlist. No vendor holding your data. You run it.
What it is
Hermes Agent is an open-source AI agent that runs on your own machine. A laptop, a home server, a cheap VPS, or Docker. That is the whole point. The agent lives where you put it, not on someone else's platform.
It is model-agnostic. You point it at OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, DeepSeek, or OpenRouter. Or you run fully local models so nothing leaves the machine. Same agent, different brain, your call. If a provider changes pricing or terms, you switch. The agent does not care.
It reaches you through messaging. More than 21 platforms, including Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp and iMessage. You talk to it where your team already talks. No new app to check, no dashboard to remember. The agent shows up in the thread.
It also has surfaces for direct work: a terminal, a desktop app, and a web dashboard. Use whichever fits the task.
What it does while you sleep
A scheduler runs jobs while you are away. Monitoring, morning digests, drafts, follow-ups. You define the job once, it runs on time. This is the part that changes your day. The agent is not waiting for you to type. It is working.
A learning loop writes and refines its own skill files from experience. Repeat tasks get faster. The agent keeps notes on what worked, then reuses them. You are not re-explaining the same process every week.
Memory and skills are plain text files. You open them, edit them, back them up like documents. That matters more than it sounds. You can read exactly what the agent knows, fix a wrong instruction by hand, and move the whole brain to a new machine with a copy and paste. No lock-in at the file level.
Your first 30 minutes
Do not plan a big rollout. Run one small loop, on any machine you already have: a laptop, a home server, or a cheap VPS.
Minutes 1 to 5: install it. Hermes Agent is MIT licensed, published by Nous Research at github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent, and installs with one command in a terminal. On Linux, macOS or WSL2, run: curl -fsSL https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.sh | bash. On Windows, run in PowerShell: iex (irm https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.ps1). On a Mac or Windows you can also download the desktop app from the project website; it ships the agent and the terminal tools together. The installer brings its own Python and Node.js, so you install nothing else.
Minutes 5 to 10: pick one model. Run hermes model and answer the prompts, or hermes setup --portal if you have a Nous Portal subscription. One login sets up the provider and the built-in tools. Or bring your own API key for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, DeepSeek or OpenRouter. Do not compare providers yet. Pick one and move.
Minutes 10 to 20: talk to it where you already are. Run hermes gateway setup and connect one messaging app. Telegram is the fastest to wire up. Send it a message, confirm it answers with tools. That is your proof the loop works. The terminal, the desktop app and the web dashboard are there too.
Minutes 20 to 30: give it one scheduled job. In the chat, ask it to summarize a source you already read and send you the digest every morning at a set time. It schedules itself. One job, one output, one place.
That is it. You now run an agent you own, in an app you already use, doing one useful thing on a schedule. Everything else is adding jobs.
Where a business puts it
Four jobs cover most of the value for a service business.
Monitoring. Watch a site, a form, an inbox, a competitor page. Alert when something changes.
Drafts. First drafts of posts, replies, proposals, and follow-up emails, written from your own notes and skill files.
Follow-up. Nudge leads who went quiet, remind the team about open threads, keep the pipeline moving without a human remembering every name.
Reports. A weekly digest of what came in, what went out, and what needs a decision.
We run this kind of agent 24/7 on our own VPS for monitoring, content and outreach. Every shipped post and fix is a real artifact. Nothing here is theory. It is the same loop we would set up for you, pointed at your business.
